He studied at the Taunton School of Art and Chelsea Polytechnic, and exhibited widely abroad as well as at the principal London galleries. He was commissioned by the Canadian government to sketch at the front in France and gather material for a large painting of Canadian soldiers constructing railways. He wrote several books on painting technique. He painted landscapes and figure subjects, and designed posters for the GWR and SR.
