Hugo Frones was born in Uruguay in 1950 and now makes his home in Toronto. Since the 1980’s, he has been under the influence of abstract expressionism, and despite the complex formal relationships in his paintings the overall tone of his work is intuitive rather than cerebral and organized. Hugo works with acrylic paint on canvas and is very fond of warm colours, mediterranean atmosphere, and spontaneous and intuitive brushstrokes of bold paint that gives the work its final touch. The evolving process continues to enhance the visual quality of the work while the artist puts something of himself in every piece. Hugo’s work explores the “control and chance concept”, the subject is discovered and rediscovered in the process of its making. Hugo’s work is displayed at Koyman Galleries in Ottawa, Ontario.
